Abstract
Prospecting petroleum in stratigraphic and structural traps can be determined depending on the measurements of surface or aerial spectral gamma ray. The Nile delta basin is the most prolific, prospective gas and condensate province in Egypt. Thorium normalization technique was applied on the sandstone reservoirs in the region to determine the hydrocarbon potentialities zones using the three spectrometric radioactive gamma ray-logs (eU, eTh and K% logs). Applying this method on the recorded gamma-ray spectrometric logs for Kafr El-Sheikh Formation in Nile delta, Egypt. The conventional well logs (gamma-ray, resistivity, neutron, density and sonic logs) were analyzed to determine the different reservoir parameters and the net pay zones in the study area. The agreement ratios between the results of thorium normalization technique and the results of the well log analysis ranging between 67 % to 73 % with average ration 71% in different studies six wells, so the application of thorium normalization technique can be used as a quick guide for hydrocarbon accumulation zones in the study reservoir rocks.
